Replacement Window industry news
Entry for June 25, 2006
The Federal Government is trying to encourage people with older windows to upgrade to energy efficient windows and doors through the energy star tax credit program that will be going on for the next two years.  The building code requirements for new homes now require energy efficient windows and doors be installed, so the focus is on the older homes. The Southern half of the Country seems to be the area with the most homes in need of  a window upgrade. In fact,  Midwest and Northeast window manufacturers are now targeting the sunbelt market. There is even a shortage of contractors who are familiar with the replacement market. I have sold many of my installation videos to contractors in states like Texas, Georgia, and Florida. The feedback that I have received suggests that retrofitting replacement windows without damaging the surrounding structure is going to become a common practice throughout the South. People sometimes have a hard time accepting something new, especially when they have been doing it a certain way for their entire life.  I also think the practice of bending aluminum to cover wood exteriors will be replaced by a product like the preformed vinyl extrusions that I sell to cover window sills and wood trim. The feedback that I have received, particularly from the Northeast, is that the vinyl product blends in much better with white vinyl windows than does the bent aluminum.
