The thickness of a typical finished wall is 5 3/8" thick, but most Vinyl Sliding Door frames are only 4 3/4" thick. That means, when you install the door flush with the exterior wall of the house, the inside frame is about 3/4" short of being flush with the interior wall. The extension jamb product is a 3/4" X 1" rectangular Vinyl extrusion with adhesive tape on one narrow side and one wide side. This allows you to attach the jamb to the inside door frame, bringing it flush with the interior wall, so you can then apply your colonial trim. The 3/4" side is most commonly used, but the 1" side can be used in cases where uneven stucco causes the frame to be further away than 3/4".
